Labor Day Weekend Wine Tasting

Labor Day Weekend! It is a great weekend, often considered the last real weekend of summer in America. But we’ll plan to keep that summertime feeling alive over the next few weekends as September weather is often a tad cooler than August and we’re not ready yet to give up summertime!

Nonetheless we admit we are heading into fall, officially the 22nd of September. Well, look at that, we’ll all be here together for the first day of Fall 2024!

Join our newsletter and stay up on fall wine tastings, workshops and events at Slack Farms. And remember, in three weeks it really IS fall!

Summer Wine Tasting: By the Water with a Breeze, Please

The languorous days of summer are never complete without a glass of wine at day’s end. We’ll share a smorgasbord of wines we think are an incredible match with summertime, from those that pair with fresh fruits and abundant seafood to those that match to barbecue fare.

It’s safe to say this summer’s tastings will be varied and updates on the coming week’s wines will be posted week by week. If you want to be in the know a bit ahead, sign up for the Slack Farms newsletter and we’ll guide your thinking.

And do bring a picnic to sit by the water with a breeze, with a glass of wine you already know you’ll like or a tasting of wines we’ve selected for you.

Father's Day Wine Tasting

Father's Day Wine Tasting

Today is Father’s Day, when we stop to celebrate our fathers.

If you think you have nothing in common with other people, think again. If there are eight billion people now on the earth, all eight billion have at least two things in common: we all had a mother, and we all had a father.

Mother’s day has its roots in pagan celebrations and has a long start over Father’s Day. Yet, in the United States, the celebration dates to the same general time of the early 1900’s. I find it interesting to think about my grandparent’s Father’s Days, and whether my parents gave them cards or gifts. In my own family, my father was always given a comb, the bigger the better. This was, of course, because he was bald.

The lore has it that dad’s love beer; it’s moms who like wine. But we know lots of dads who like wine just as much, so here’s toasting the wine imbibers among them all — aw, heck, might as well just raise a toast to all dads. There are, after all, a few things in life more important than wine.

Spring Wine Tasting: The Lightness of Wine in the Spirit of Spring

The last week of Spring wine tastings will focus on the ridiculous words that everyone wonders about. Words like lean, big, barnyard, cat’s pee, kerosene, sweaty and mousy.

It’s a big world of strange flavors out there in wine, which BTW may have upwards of hundreds of different chemicals in every sip. No wonder there are so many different words applied.

Oh, and one other one we should get to at this juncture: expensive. Yes, that is a word sometimes given to a wine, as in “this smells expensive”.

By this week, if you’ve been through the Spring Wine Nose Sundays, you should be both a pro and a ham at it!

Spring Wine Tasting: The Lightness of Wine in the Spirit of Spring

Spring wine tastings will continue these next two weeks to introduce you to all of those crazy terms that accompany the sensational natures of wine, but mostly those of the nose.

Why? Because Spring is the season of the olfactory, when the world is reproducing and you know it for sure with your nose.

A bit of coloration, a bit of analysis of the legs of wine, and then who knows it might be minutes before we taste it, just adoring all of the nose options. Here are some we’ll examine: cinnamon, vanilla, raspberry, blueberry, citrus, lemon, melon, boysenberry, chocolate, nutty, white chocolate, fruitcake, black cherries, black currants, toasty oak, peaches, oranges, pineapple, grapefruit. And don’t worry, we won’t skip fresh, tannin, acidic, big, barnyard and simple monikers like sweet and dry. We’ll give you a soup to nuts.

So join us each week and we’ll give a hint of the wines to be tasted beforehand.. Join our newsletter and stay up on spring wine tastings, workshops and events at Slack Farms.

If the weather has some rain in it, we’ll move indoors.

Memorial Day Weekend Wine Tasting

Memorial Day Weekend! It is a great weekend, often considered the beginning of summertime in America. Moreover it is a time to thank all of those who give their lives to our country to keep us safe, and to recognize those whose ultimate effort cut short their own lives. There is no gratefulness more sincere.

At Slack today, we continue our Spring wine tastings to continue introducing those crazy terms that accompany wines: cinnamon, vanilla, raspberry, blueberry, citrus, lemon, melon, boysenberry, chocolate, nutty, white chocolate, fruitcake, black cherries, black currants, toasty oak, peaches, oranges, pineapple, grapefruit. Today is Mother’s Day, and we pause our Spring wine tasting’s focus on the nose to focus instead on our mothers.

If you think you have nothing in common with other people, think again. If there are eight billion people now on the earth, all eight billion have at least one thing in common: we all had a mother.

Today we celebrate her and all of you current moms out there with a special tasting, for the moms among us. We’ll raise a toast for those best known in our memories.

Spring SlackWorks: Seedling Swap

As soon as the days start getting a little longer I always daydream about my garden for the year. Browsing the seed catalogs is my favorite winter activity. I find myself purchasing 10 different varieties of the same plant, just to see how pretty they are when they ripen. So its no wonder that I end up with enough seedling to feed an army. I have a feeling I’m not the only one who does this. This year can be a bit different! Bring all your unused seedlings/seeds for a seedling swap. Maybe you forgot to start your favorite herb, but I bet Louise in the next plot has some to share!

The Garden of TEA-den

Help us as we add a new section to our community garden, a tea garden! We’ll be planting seedlings of all different varieties that we can harvest later in the season to make tea sachets. These herbal teas, less commonly known as tisanes, have health-promoting properties that everyone one these days could benefit from . The thought of sipping a tea grown from our own garden sounds almost as good as sipping a glass of Slack wine. You’ll be able to take home some seedlings to add to your own home garden or add to your SlackWorks allotment.

This event is free for SlackWorks members. non-members-$10
