Plan for a bit of eggnog and mulled wine as well as a performance of Carol of the Bells with our Ukrainian Winter Interns at 4 pm. Carol of the Bells is a four note repetetive melody which you will readily recognize, but the lyrics you may not. That is because there are many variations of lyrics you may have heard, including “Ring Christmas Bells” (1947 Minna Louise Hohman), “Come Dance and Sing” (1957 Anonymous) and “Hark to the Bells” (1972 Anonymous).
The original Ukrainian lyrics translate to “The Generous (Bountiful) One” and tell the story of a sparrow flying into a household to proclaim family members will have a bountiful year. The song was originally associated with the coming of Spring in April, but became part of the celebration known as Shchedrivky in the second week of January. It is best known now throughout the world as a Christmas Carol with music by Mykola Leontovych and the English lyrics contributed by Peter J. Wilhousky.
All of our Ukrainian Slack Farms Interns known this song intimately from childhood, probably akin to Silent Night in our memories.
